5 essential autumn home maintenance checks!

It’s that time of year again when we awake our central heating systems at home and end up spending more time indoors, snuggling up to a blanket in front of a warm burning fireplace.

But before the cold harsh winter starts you need to make sure your home is ready for the hit. We’ve put together some simple maintenance checks you can carry out yourself to prepare your home for the cold weather.

1) Heating checks

Autumn is the perfect time to check if your heating is functioning correctly; giving you enough time to fix any problems before winter arrives. It’s also a good idea to book your annual boiler service now as engineers do tend to get really busy at the beginning of winter.

2)  Stop drafts getting into your home

It’s always a good idea to check all doors and windows for any potential drafts.

If you do spot any cold spots, its best to add a threshold strip to external doors as this is a quick and easy way to stop draughts, plus your heating system will be more efficient as you are limiting heat loss around the house.

3) Check air vents

It’s important to get a proper flow of air around your home, especially during this time of the year. Lack of ventilation can cause condensation, so make sure you have installed extractor fans or vents around your house.

If you already have vents in your home, it’s always a good idea to check that they are clear of dirt and debris to allow a good flow of air in all the rooms.

4) Clear drains

Autumn can be a beautiful season with the grounds covered with colourful hues of orange and red leaves, yet it’s not so beautiful when they clog your outside drains and gullies.

On a dry day, it’s best to remove any fallen leaves and other blockages to keep your gutters clean and functioning correctly.

5) Chimney services

If you have a chimney and fireplace, it’s important you get your chimney inspected at least once a year, especially before you put it back to use in Winter. A buildup of Creosote, which is a chemical mass produced from fossil fuels and wood, can lead to a chimney fire if not cleaned.

We offer annual service agreements and plans for your oil heating and boiler, to make sure your heatings system is always working at it’s best, no matter what time of year we are in!
